Coming Together While Walking (Week 19)

Thanks to you, Mother’s Day week was full of love and commitment to bring awareness of the maternal health crisis within the United States.

This report is from the #bebetter52 challenge to walk for a cause May 6th-12th,  2019.

Challenges Completed and Money Raised:

Year-to-date we have raised $734.30 for Every Mother Counts! That is 1595 challenges.

Be Better Teams come together through walking:

Through the charity mile app, totally free to download, the Be Better team, Mama Needs A Minute was able to log more than 30 cumulative miles. Last week was a wonderful example of the power of women coming together.  It was also a wonderful opportunity to be active and outdoors with kiddos.

“Our family loved this challenge- it made us get out, hold hands and get some fresh air!” - Nasem D

“Our team loved this week’s challenge of “Walking For a Cause.”  It was so much fun to all come together and use the “Team” feature on the Charity Miles App which allowed us to track our progress as a team while raising money.  We all put in the extra effort to get outside with our families and explore and as a result, together we walked 30 miles for Every Mother Counts.”- Megan O

Thank you to all the women who participated in this week’s challenge to walk for a cause. We definitely walked over 200 miles!

Shout out to everyone who participated in my goal to walk/run 26 miles!

On Sunday before the challenge, I put out an invitation to anyone interested in joining me in my goal to complete 26 miles during the walk for a cause challenge. To my surprise, about 15 people responded via Instagram and text message. As I shared the journey on Instagram Story, I felt overwhelmed by the support and encouragement from other women (some I know personally, others have become new friends).  We walked long distances because in some parts of the world, many women have to travel as far as 26 miles, often on foot or in labor, to reach a doctor or clinic. Distance is one of the biggest barriers to maternal health care.

Virtual Run on May 11th

On May 11th, women around the nation came together virtually to walk or run in the 2nd Annual Run to Believe virtual run through More Miles Race. This race donated 100% of proceeds to Every Mother Counts. With my husband and kids in tow, I went down to Newport Beach, CA, and ran a 10K. For someone who hasn’t really run prior to having kids, it was difficult but incredibly rewarding and meaningful.

Our First In Person Be Better Event:

One of our Be Better Team Captains in Orange County had a great idea. She thought it would be amazing to invite all the Orange County 52’ers to a “kid friendly” hike on Wednesday morning at 10:30am at Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve (2301 University Drive, Newport Beach, CA).

We encourage you to host #bebetter52 events in your neighborhood. If you do, please let us know by emailing aly@bebettermovement.com or tagging us on instagram @mybebetter.
