Salsa #bebetter52

Maybe you’re in a bit of a rut with the meals you’re eating, or maybe you’re struggling to incorporate those big bold flavors while trying to eat healthy. This week let’s spice things up a bit! Salsa is one of the best ways to add flavor to your food while delivering healthy nutrients to your body. Being one of the most popular condiments, it provides a boost of essential benefits. This week’s Be Better challenge is to turn up the heat a couple of notches with a little salsa and enjoy all the nutritional benefits. This week’s mantra: "Healthy does not have to mean bland.”

We all know how tasty salsa can be, but what many of you may not know are the various health benefits salsa has, one being that it’s a great source of vitamin C! Lime juice, onions, tomatoes, and jalapeños are yummy foods that happen to be great sources of the antioxidant vitamin C, which can prevent cell damage, protect the integrity of your tissues, aid in the production of collagen, and boost your immunity. Salsa can also stabilize blood sugar. Because salsa is full of fiber and doesn’t contain much sugar or fat, it won’t raise your blood sugar, making it a real winner, especially for those who are diabetic.

Whether you’re eating salsa on tacos, scrambled eggs, or with a basket of your favorite chips, it’s a great addition to any meal. This week, try substituting those fatty salad dressings by topping off your salads with a dollop of corn salsa. Try using salsa as a healthy garnish for grilled chicken or fish, the perfect way to add flavor without the use of salts or fats.

This week, we challenge you to incorporate those bold flavors into your breakfast, lunch and dinner, and trust us, your health (and taste buds!!) will thank you. If you’re feeling extra bold and inspired, try making your own salsa from scratch! Depending on your taste and love of spiciness, you can opt for the more traditional ingredients like jalapeños, onions, and tomatoes or even incorporate different ingredients like mangos, pineapple and strawberries. What's in the My Be Better Box:

If you subscribe to My Be Better Box, you'll experience the bold and delicious taste of Heidi’s Salsa, which is one that is inspired by the chunkier authentic Mexican salsa and is infused with green hatch chilis. Growing up in a large family with strong Mexican culture, Heidi Rivera learned the masterful art of salsa making at a very young age. With encouragement from her co-workers, in 2009 she entered her salsa in the 30th Anniversary of Los Angeles Farmers Markets' salsa contest and took home 1st place. From there, she explored the possibilities of spreading her delicious salsa to everyone. Heidi says, “If only I could jar up all the love and revelry of generations in the kitchen.”
