Practice Solitude #bebetter52

This week’s #bebetter52 challenge is to practice solitude for at least 30 minutes, which is sure to bring many benefits to your well-being. There is a difference between solitude and loneliness; loneliness is associated with a sense of isolation, while solitude is a state of being alone without being lonely. This “alone time” leads to a new level of self-awareness that can benefit your life greatly. If you’re thinking to yourself, “I’m too busy to make time for solitude,” then you’re likely to reap the most benefits from this time. 

While it may seem like “alone time” is wasting time that could be better used to get work done, it’s scientifically proven that solitude increases productivity. Solitude can also spark your creativity! This is why many artists tend to isolate themselves in nature when working on a project or searching for inspiration. Other studies show that happiness, life satisfaction, and stress management increase as a result of a person’s ability to tolerate “alone time.” Most of all, solitude gives you an opportunity to know yourself better.


So how does one practice solitude? It couldn’t be more simple! First, schedule some time during your week where you plan to be alone. Choose a location, ideally outside of your normal surroundings (i.e. school, work, home). If you can find a spot outdoors, that’s an added bonus because you can soak up some vitamin D and fresh air while also getting your head right. Try to bring as few of your belongings as possible to avoid any distractions that can interfere with this time. Finally, you are able to just sit alone with your thoughts. Allow your mind to wander.  And remember, there are no set rules about what you should be thinking about!
