Healthy Breakfast

We have all heard the phrase, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it is true. If you want your day to be productive, energetic and efficient, then it is important to make sure that you are consuming a healthy breakfast. This week’s #bebetter52 challenge is to eat healthy breakfast everyday.

Breakfast is akin to filling up a full tank before going on a road trip. Your day is like the road trip, and the gas is breakfast. A nutrient filled breakfast gives you the boost you need to seize the day. According to WebMD, eating breakfast aids in weight loss, improves concentration, lowers cholesterol levels and endows more strength and endurance to engage in physical activity.

Eating breakfast is beneficial if done right. A bagel, doughnut or granola bars don’t really do the trick. A healthy breakfast meal should contain a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low- or non-fat dairy, and lean protein.

Our favorite recipe here at Be Better is Overnight Oatmeal. This is a great breakfast food for those that don’t have the time to cook in the morning. To make this, all you need to do is combine:

-       1/3 cup of almond milk

-       ¼ cup of rolled oats

-       ¼ of Greek Yogurt

-       2 teaspoons of chia seeds

-       2 teaspoons of honey

-       1 teaspoon of cinnamon

After you have combined these ingredients in a mason jar, cover it and shake to mix them together. Refrigerate the oatmeal overnight and in the morning, as you are about to leave the house, fold in some blueberries or strawberries. Enjoy!

If you aren’t one for oatmeal everyday, here are a few other options you might want to try:

1. A veggie omelet and a piece of whole-wheat toast.

2. A whole-wheat English muffin with low-fat cheese, scrambled egg, and a slice of tomato or ham.

3. Smoothie made with fruit, a scoop of protein powder and some low-fat yogurt.

4. Hard-boiled egg and a banana.

5. Avocado on whole-wheat toast with tomatoes and onions. Add spices as you like.

If you have a healthy recipe in mind, feel free to try it. Let us know how your week of healthy breakfast went by reporting your challenge!
