Green Smoothies #bebtter52

Some of us drink coffee in the morning, some of us prefer tea, but we highly recommend starting your morning off by making an energizing green smoothie!

This week's #bebetter52 challenge is to start your day by making a healthy and delicious green smoothie! This allows you to utilize all the nutrients you need to start your morning feeling energized and ready to go.

You don’t have to follow the directions to a T when you find smoothie recipes online. Be creative and put your own spin on your smoothie.

A huge benefit of drinking green smoothies is they usually consist of more vegetables than fruit.  The American Cancer Society recommends we have five to nine servings of vegetables and fruits daily. Drinking tasty smoothies is a delicious way to ensure your daily vegetable intake as well as a fantastic way to entice--or maybe trick--children into eating their vegetables.

Green smoothies are jam packed with daily vitamins and minerals. They have an excellent source of calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, copper and a good source of B vitamins and E. Green smoothies also strengthens your immune system! The top immune-boosting smoothies ingredients are citrus fruits, ginger and cranberries!

Here are some of my personal favorite green smoothie recipes:

1.       Ginger Orange Smoothie

o   1 1/2 cups filtered water

o   4 generous handfuls fresh spinach

o   4 romaine leaves (optional)

o   2 navel oranges

o   2 ripe bananas

o   1"-2" knob of fresh ginger

o   1 cucumber (optional), peel if not organic

2.       Blueberry Mint Smoothie

o   2 cups spinach (These will blend better if you freeze them beforehand)

o   2 cups blueberry (I’ve used 1 c. fresh and 1 c. frozen)

o   1 kiwi

o   3-4 large mint  leaves

o   1 cup coconut water

o   1 cup ice

3.       Detox Green Smoothie

o   1 cup green tea, chilled

o   1 cup loosely packed cilantro

o   1 cup loosely packed organic baby kale (or another baby green)

o   1 cup cucumber

o   1 cup pineapple

o   juice of 1 lemon

o   1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated

o   ½ avocado

There are countless benefits of green smoothies and we are just scraping the surface!
