Week 21 (Health) Goal: Coconut Oil


images-1This week’s health goal: Use coconut oil on a daily basis! Whether or not you’ve used it before, this article will give you tips on how -- and why -- to use it! 

Coconut oil can be used for cooking, for skin and for hair. Coconut oil is extracted from the kernel, or the meat, of the coconut.  How to cook with it?  Use it like any other cooking oil. The benefit? It’s vegan! Although coconut oil is high in saturated fats, a moderate amount is good for you. Like any oil, you don’t want to use too much. But combining this delicious oil with vegetables is the best way to take advantage of its nutrients. You can cook with it at high temperatures and even store it for long periods of time without it going rancid.

Use coconut oil on your skin and hair. This oil is great because it does not contain water, unlike many other lotions that dry out the skin. Coconut oil provides lasting moisture to your skin. It also differs from petroleum-based moisturizers, which can suffocate the skin. Coconut oil contains large amounts of vitamin E, which is great for skin and hair. To use in hair, just massage in like a conditioner in the shower.  Leave in or rinse out depending on how dry your hair is.  Coconut oil will help replace proteins in your hair, making it stronger and healthier. You can also use coconut oil as a scalp conditioner, massage oil, personal lubricant, after-sun treatment and natural underarm deodorant.  

This week, grab a bottle of coconut oil and go crazy!  Use it in your food, on your skin and even in your hair.  You won’t regret it.
