Anne Frank once said, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” We are not asking you to improve the world but merely to improve your world. Many times, we are so focused on getting to our destination, we neglect doing simple actions that make our lives easier. Tasks we can complete in 30 seconds are probably the easiest and least stressful ones on our to-do lists, yet we still procrastinate.
This week’s #bebetter52 challenge is to complete those small tasks (the ones that always seem to build up to an overwhelming list of chores) and complete them-- then and there-- when you first see them. If you can complete the task in 30 seconds, we want you to finish it right away, tasks such as making the bed in the morning, cleaning dishes, starting to load the laundry or putting aways clothes.
Psychology Today reports that 20% of people avoid tasks and seek out distractions. Procrastination has a huge effect on our emotions because when we delay doing something important, we worry about it for the rest of the day. This stressor is on our minds, constantly causing us to continue on this downward spiral. Soon, procrastination becomes a negative habit.
To break this habit, you might want to tackle a few of these tasks that take about 30 seconds:
1. Make your bed when you wake up.
2. Wash your dish when you are finished with it.
3. Put away dirty clothes in the hamper.
4. Hang up clothes immediately after taking them off.
5. Send a quick response to a text or an email.
6. Fill up your water bottle.
7. Put away spice bottles and other food items back in their proper place.
These are just some ideas to kickstart your week.
